In the summer of 1936, a 30-year-old school teacher from Chicago boarded a luxury liner in New York's harbor. Bound for England and points beyond, Frank Daily set out to fulfill his dreams of what for him would be “the trip of a lifetime.” For two months he traveled through Europe, fascinated by the historical icons, captivated by the unique character of each country’s denizens – and alarmed by the rising tide of fascism in Italy and Nazi Germany. Years later, his son (also named Frank Daily) found two handwritten journals stored in a box – his father’s daily record of his European journey. Stirred by his father’s appreciation of culture and eye for detail, he decided to publish the journals as a book for the Daily family – and anyone else – to read. “My Trip Abroad” is a trip back in time, a personal reflection of what life was like for a young American discovering Europe 80 years ago – and a prescient and timely glimpse of things to come.

This is such a fun and intriguing read. Often, I couldn't help but feel as if I was on the trip with Mr. Daily. As someone who has recently visited some of the sites featured, it was great to compare and contrast with those places eight decades ago. While the book is a fun trip, I couldn't help but feel a bit of a shiver when reading about some of the political upheaval brewing in Europe in the 1930s and relating it to our current global political climate(s). Of course, this lovely mix of the political and the personal only adds to the joy of this read!Product details

My Trip Abroad Europe in 1936 Frank J Daily 9781544640204 Books Reviews
This is a memoir that should be on the required reading list for both English and History students. Frank Daily's publication of his father's summer of '36 European trip is a gift read for those who have and those who have not visited Europe. The author's eloquent use of descriptive language along with his generous and faithful spirit to God and country takes the reader beyond a charming travelogue into a place for self reflection on our current world.
Hard to believe that non-"professional writers" can be this gifted. Having visited many of the sites about which the author wrote, it is amazing how accurate his descriptions are and how little they have changed. I felt as if I was walking beside Mr. Daily as he described these sites. His observations on social/economic class were great and unfortunately, his observations on Germany and Italy were a harbinger of a horrid time in world history.
A delightful read. Great detail and description. You will feel as if you were along on the journey. This is one of those books that zips along and makes you want to pick it up every time you put it down.
Frank Daily's travel journal recalls the delight of one's own first trip abroad -- the excitement of finally visiting places that one had read about, the surprises of being somewhere so different from one's home town. It also brings to life a time when travel happened at a slower pace and one could absorb and reflect on one's experience. Fortunately for the reader, Daily recorded his reflections, so 80 years later we, too, can share his "Grand Tour" and maybe even use his journal as a guide to our own "must sees."
I thoroughly enjoyed this memoir and wish I had had a chance to know the author personally. Read it for a glimpse of how pre-war Europe felt and looked to a curious and observant traveler. To imagine traveling abroad back in time when travel was special. Or simply to make the acquaintance of this gifted and personable author. But beware Reading such an elegant and interesting memoir could beckon you not only to your own personal adventure, but also to start keeping your own Daily diary.
